Your washing machine is shedding plastic

October 14, 2026

Here is a fact worth knowing: polyester sheds microplastic fibers every time you wash it. The agitation of a wash cycle pulls tiny fibers loose from synthetic fabric. They rinse down the drain with the wash water. Most of them are far too small for a standard washing machine filter to catch.

That is not a spill or an accident. It is what happens on a normal Tuesday when you wash a load of gym clothes.

Where do the fibers go?

Wastewater treatment plants catch a large share of them, but not all of them. The rest can end up in rivers and oceans. The captured share often ends up in sewage sludge, some of which is spread on farmland. From there, the fibers are in the environment, and they do not biodegrade the way a cotton fiber does.

None of this means one wash ruins the planet. It means billions of washes add up, because most of the clothing in most closets is now synthetic.

What actually helps

The third one is the real fix. Filters help with the clothes you already own. Natural fibers fix the next load before it starts.
