Flip the tag. Two lines tell you almost everything you need to know about what you are about to wear. You do not need a textile degree. You need ten seconds and a willingness to put things back on the rack.
Look for the fiber list. It will say something like "100% cotton" or "60% cotton, 40% polyester." That is the whole story.
The names to watch for are the synthetics: polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane (also sold as spandex). Elastane is the stretchy one, and a small percentage for stretch in an otherwise natural garment is normal. But when polyester is the first fiber listed, the garment is mostly plastic.
The names you want to see: cotton, linen, wool, silk, hemp, and cashmere. If the tag leads with one of those, you are holding a natural fiber garment.
The country of origin will not tell you much about quality on its own, but it reminds you that clothing is a global product, and the tag is the one honest document on the whole garment. Brands can say almost anything in an ad. The tag has to list what is actually in the fabric.
Next time you shop, make it a game. Pick up anything, flip the tag, and check the first fiber. If it says polyester, put it back. If it says cotton, linen, or wool, it stays in the running. Ten seconds, every time, and your closet starts changing on its own.
